The Miller's Tale
Alex Edinger 11/02/2010 10:59 PM

I thought the men treated the carpenters wife well not really so much nice, but kind of spoiling her.  For instance how the clerk would even give her money for her own pleasure, not because she actually needed it.  And I think she was more infautated with Nicholas because she might have felt I guess a little ambitous or sneaky with energy because she had slept with him, and her being with Nic probly made her feel more wanted and feel some freedom.

Kyle Leurquin 11/02/2010 2:42 PM

The Miller was a not so caring guy he was kind of stinky and never really had much care for a women but he did put a lot of time into his work.  He was kind of a depressed person and never talked much in the fact that he usally works all by himself and never talks to many people.  But i think that he would care for a women if he didnt stink so much and would also have the guts to speak to one!!!

RE: Brandon,

I think you summed up the tale pretty well and getting the main part in there about how the carpenter's wife isn't noble to her husband and she kind of sluts herself off.  In the first sentence when you the carpenter was highly possesive of his wife I assueme you meant that he is protective in the sense of that he gets kind of jealous if any man looked at her.

Alex Edinger 10/31/2010 10:15 PM

I forgot to do the last post, is this the post we are suppose to reply to someone or say how we thought they presented their info? or was that the last one?

Miss Schultz 10/30/2010 12:56 PM

I want all of you to think a bit more about how each man's treatment of women affects how we view their character. Were your opinions changed as you go into the story or were your initial opinions of each character validated and justified by the character's behavior? Please apply this same analysis to the end of the story - did the man who deserved to win actually win the woman? What do you think is the moral of the story?

THIS POST IS DUE BY TUESDAY EVENING, NOV. 2nd

Brandon Aerts 10/27/2010 6:59 PM

chaucer tells the tale about Nicholas boarding with the carpenter who is highly possesive of his 18 year old wife, Nicholas decides after meeting the carpenter named John's wife that he would like to sleep with her and they begin flirting.  After a while of flirting Nicholas decides to touch John's wife but she started crying and after a while of discussion they decide they will sleep together.  Nicholas believes he can fool John that he didn't sleep with his wife. the Parrish clerk is also interested in the carpenters wife, he buys her gifts and gives money to her so she can buy herself nice things. After a little while Allisoun and Nicholas decide they love eachother rather then her loving the Carpenter so they make a plan to spend a whole night together

I agree with Izaak this is so not a Blog is more like punishment that we are meant to do in like a prison LOL i have commented on a blog many times just check out Se7ensins.com thats a blogsite but now on to the next topic

Izaak you really did clerify the whole prolouge and i think that is a good thing if someone really needs it quick for a Book review in  Mr.Winklers class but then hes gonna be like where did you find this and the student is gonna say "Izaak Cappelle" and i like how you made points on all the charcacters in this story (wow this is so painful)

One thing i don't like about this book is that it is so confusing to me because of all the character switching and all the text is kinda hard to understand cause they use some pretty big words...Back to the story Chaucer describes each of the characters individually like for example he puts the wife of bath and kind of like a girl that get around and the knight is a strong noble one has and won 15 maybe to be 16 battles if the squire has anything to do with it.

BTW Miss Schultz what is up with the captchas why are they need on here like we are so gonna have a hacker on this Fakeblog site lol im joking but thanks for reading all this

Miss Schultz 10/24/2010 11:15 AM

 (1) Izaak - this is a blog, I just have to approve all of the posts beforehand for content and appropriateness. You will be able to respond to other student's posts by posting a new message to the topic if you like.

(2) Both of your posts were thoughtful, though neither answered the questions in the prompt.

(3) Kyle - I found your source: http://faculty.winthrop.edu/kosterj/ENGL201/chaucer2.htm

Next time, I expect you to do your own, original work. You may reference what other scholars have said on the topic but you need to create an argument and a response on your own.

Izaak Cappelle 10/22/2010 11:44 AM

First I would like to point out that it is not a blog, a blog is a website that allows users to reflect, share opinions, and discuss various topics in the form of an online journal while readers may comment on posts.

This whole story was about how the wife of bath who is the carpenter’s wife is a slut. It starts out with the knight finishing his story about noble things and everyone wants to hear a story of equal nobility.  So they as ask the monk to tell a story, but the miller cut him off. The miller is drunk and threats to leave if he can’t tell his story.  So everyone gives in and lets him tell his story, he starts by saying his story is about a carpenter and his wife, and how a cleric made a fool of him.

The reeve tells the miller he is a drunk and ignorant man. The miller pretends like he didn’t hear him and starts his story.

Chaucer mentions that the tale is very bad and he is only telling it cause without it you are missing part of the adventure.  Story starts about a carpenter who married a young and wild 18 year old

Not Kyle Leurquin 10/22/2010 8:31 AM
Nicholas is a poor astronomy student who boards with an elderly carpenter, John. Nicholas deceives John and sleeps with Alisoun right behind his back, but Absolon, gets Nicholas in the end.
The local clerk in the Millers Tale, Absolon is foolish. He wears stockings underneath his church gown, and his leather shoes are decorated like the stained glass windows in a cathedral. He curls his hair and fancies Alisoun.
The stupid carpenter who Alisoun is married and with whom Nicholas boards. John is jealous and possessive of his wife. Nicholas offers John the chance to share his knowledge. He gullibly believes Nicholas statement that a second flood is coming, which allows Nicholas to sleep with John’s wife
The carpenter is deceived by his wife and Nicholas when he travels from Oxenforde to Osneye, where is working on land belonging to the Abbey. Notice that each man travels from a "secular" home to a "holy" destination. Even more puzzling, the carpenter appears to be the most sympathetic character in the tale. He is the only one who shows concern for others, and yet he clearly receives the worst punishment and the greatest humiliation. By the end of the tale, he is publicly exposed not only as a cuckold but also as a fool. Chaucer's extensive knowledge of Oxford and university workings is on display in this Tale, which is often used as evidence to suggest that Chaucer at least briefly attended a university.
Miss Schultz 10/18/2010 10:41 AM

How does Chaucer describe each of the characters introduced in the beginning of this tale? (please write on Nicholas the cleric, the carpenter, and the parish clerk Absolom) How does the way Chaucer describes Nicholas' room affect how we feel about him as readers - does it reveal anything about the character? Discuss how each man treats the carpenter's young wife. How does their treatment of the opposite sex affect their characterization and our opinion of them?
